LEWISBURG, Pa. – Members of the Bucknell football team picked up two more weekly awards from the Patriot League on Monday for their roles in the Bison's 27-24 overtime victory over Lafayette. Senior TE/WR Jake Hartman (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands) was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, while senior K/P Derek Maurer (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) earned Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week plaudits.
Hartman earned his first Patriot League weekly award coming off a career day in Bucknell's victory, totaling seven catches for 134 yards and three touchdowns. All three were career highs and the three touchdown catches tied the school single-game record. Hartman is just the fifth player in program history to have three touchdown receptions in one game.
Hartman's touchdown catches were 12, 19 and 45 yards. The shortest one was perhaps the most important as it tied the game at 24-24 with 1:01 left in the fourth quarter. He now has seven receptions of at least 20 yards this season.
A starter in three games this year, Hartman entered the game with 12 catches for 206 yards and no touchdowns in his career.
Maurer earned his second career Special Teams Player of the Week honor after also winning it following this year's season-opening win over VMI. Against the Leopards, Maurer was 3-for-3 on extra points, 2-for-2 on field goals, punted twice and kicked off five times. The most memorable of those kicks was his game-winning overtime 33-yard field goal that split the uprights and gave Bucknell its seventh win of the year.
Maurer's extra point on Hartman's touchdown with 1:01 to play in the fourth quarter is what sent the game to overtime.
Bucknell's placekicker and punter this year, Maurer has also handled kickoff duties. He is 6-for-8 on field goals, 23-for-28 on extra points and is averaging nearly 36 yards per punt and more than 60 yards per kickoff.
Maurer needs just 11 more points to reach the 100 mark for his career.
The Bison are 7-1, 3-0 Patriot League this year and are off to their best start since 1997. Bucknell will host fellow Patriot League undefeated team Fordham (8-1, 4-0 PL) Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The game will be televised to a national audience on CBS Sports Network.
