LEWISBURG, Pa. – Senior Katie Jessee has been named the Patriot League Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as voted on by the league's sports information directors. She becomes the ninth Bison runner to earn the award.
Competing in the final Patriot League Championships of her career, Jessee earned First Team All-Patriot League honors with a third-place finish. It was the second all-conference accolade of her career, as she picked up Second Team status as a sophomore.
Jessee's great postseason run added to an already impressive season. She took home the title in a 112-runner field at the Detroit Mercy Invitational and was the runner-up out of 60 athletes at the season-opening Bison Open. She also fared well against difficult competition at the Princeton Invitational, taking 30th out of 278 runners.
A Dean's List student and a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, Jessee is the Bison's first Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year since Gillian Nordquist in 2007. The Bison dominated the award during a six-year stretch from 1996-2001, with Julie Sweitzer (1996-98) and Becki Marshall (1999-2001) each winning the top academic honor three times.
Jessee and the Bison, who lost a tiebreaker to Boston University for first place at the conference meet, will compete in the Mid-Atlantic Championships at Penn State on Friday.
