LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's water polo team traveled to California for this past weekend's Santa Clara Rodeo and posted an impressive 5-0 record while facing four nationally ranked teams. One of the many key cogs in the success over the weekend was junior Stefan Aleksic (Belgrade, Serbia/Sport Gymnasium), who was named Bison Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career on Monday.
The team's leading scorer with 18 points (9g, 9a) over the weekend, Aleksic opened the tournament with perhaps his best performance, totaling a season high-tying six points and equaling his career high with four goals in a 9-8 win over host Santa Clara, the No. 15 team in the nation.
Aleksic also had six points in a 13-10 win over No. 19 Cal Baptist and posted three multi-goal outings to bring his season tally to 10.
An Honorable Mention All-American last year, Aleksic leads Bucknell in points (63) this year and his goal total of 36 ranks second to freshman Grant Curry. Aleksic also has 13 ejections drawn, including five this past weekend.
A starter in 16 games this year, Aleksic now has 129 goals and 113 assists in his career. He is just 21 assists away from moving into the top 10 in school history in that category.
Bucknell (12-6), which was receiving votes in the latest national rankings, has won seven games in a row and is 7-1 in its last eight games against ranked foes, including 4-0 this past weekend. The seven-game winning streak is the longest for the Bison since late in the 2012 campaign. Bucknell had never before taken a trip to California and come back undefeated.
The Bison will conclude their regular season this Saturday, Nov. 1, with a 1 p.m. game against current No. 9 Princeton in Kinney Natatorium. Bucknell lost at Princeton by a 9-6 score earlier this year.
