LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell junior Michael McGowan (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) has been named Bison Athlete of the Week for his performance in the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational cross country meet at Penn State on Friday. McGowan, who also earned an Honorable Mention for Patriot League Runner of the Week, finished second overall, leading the Bucknell men to a team victory.
The Bison bested Penn State, Pittsburgh and Mount St. Mary's among the Division I teams competing. McGowan covered the 5.2-mile course in 26:03, which was second only to Penn State's Robby Creese (25:50). Bucknell's John Dugan finished third.
McGowan has been the top Bison runner in both meets so far this season. On Aug. 31 he won the Bison Open on his home course. McGowan was Bucknell's fourth finisher at last year's Patriot League championships, and he went on to earn All-East honors in outdoor track with a fourth-place showing in the 10,000 meters at the IC4A Championships.
The Bison will be back in action in two weeks, when they send groups to the Boston College Coast to Coast on Sept. 27 and the Bloomsburg Invitational on Sept. 28.
