LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell men's and women's cross country teams will compete on the road for the first time this season when they head an hour west to Penn State for the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on the Blue-White Golf Course. The competition features high school and collegiate races beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday.
In addition to Bucknell and Penn State, Pittsburgh, West Virginia (women only), Johns Hopkins, Grove City, Geneseo State and Cortland State will be competing.
Both Bison teams are coming off strong performances two weeks ago, competing against Juniata and Susquehanna at the Bison Open. The men's squad captured the top nine places, led by race winner Michael McGowan. Montana DiPietrantonio won the women's race, as the Bison earned eight of the top 10 spots.
"This will be our first major test of the season and the competition is very good," head coach Kevin Donner said of Friday's women's meet. "Penn State is ranked very highly in Division I, and Johns Hopkins is the defending national champion in Division III. WVU has a ton of talent and will be very good in the Mid-Atlantic region. We had some very good workouts recently and we expect some of our veterans to step up and lead us this week."
Speaking about his men's team's outlook, Donner said, "The competition will be very good, and our men are excited to see where they stack up. Of course we know Penn State will be very good, and there are some excellent Division III schools competing in Cortland, Geneseo and Johns Hopkins, who will be very hungry to run the D-I guys."
After competing at Penn State, the Bison will have another two weeks off before sending contingents to both the Boston College Coast to Coast meet (Sept. 27) and the Bloomsburg Invitational (Sept. 28).
