Bucknell's Bybel Sweeps Titles at UNCG ITA Summer Circuit Event

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Patriot League Rookie of the Year and Bucknell tennis standout Nick Bybel (Lancaster, Pa./Hilton Head Christian Academy (S.C.)) has kept up his winning ways this summer, taking both the singles and doubles titles at the UNCG ITA Summer Circuit Event at Greensboro, N.C., last weekend. The rising sophomore defeated Randy Phillips in straight sets for the singles championship in addition to taking first in doubles while playing with Joel Roberts.
Bybel won each of his singles bouts in straight sets. Only twice did he allow more than three games to an opponent, once in the round of 32 where he defeated Diego Castano 6-3, 6-4 and again in the final. Seeded second at the ITA event, Bybel ultimately defeated No. 5 Phillips, 7-6 (6), 6-1.
Bybel and Roberts also won five consecutive matches together in doubles to win a second title at the event. The final victory came against George and Joseph Cartledge, 8-3. The last two rounds proved to be the smoothest for Bybel and his partner as they also blanked Phillips and Cameron Smith 8-0 in the semifinal.
In his first season with Bucknell, Bybel went 22-9 in singles and 18-10 at doubles while playing primarily at the No. 1 position in both. His 22 singles victories ranked second on the team. At the end of the campaign, Bybel became Bucknell's first-ever Patriot League Rookie of the Year on the men's side in addition to earning a selection to the All-Patriot League First Team.
As a team, Bucknell men's tennis went 15-8 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League. Its 15 wins were the second-most in program history.
