LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell University's West Field Complex will have a new synthetic turf for the 2003 Bison field hockey season, thanks to a lead gift by William Graham '62.
William Graham '62 has pledged $1,225,000 to the following athletic initiatives: $125,000 to the club varsity wrestling program, $500,000 as the naming gift for the field hockey/women's lacrosse/general recreation artificial turf field, and $600,000 to support women's athletics programs.
As Graham celebrated his 40th Reunion just last year, he maintained that the value of his total experiences at Bucknell, both as a student and as an athlete, afforded him a solid foundation for his career and life. "Bill Graham just cannot realize how wonderful his gift is for a terrific group of young women" added Head Field Hockey Coach Heather Lewis.
THE PRODUCT
The synthetic turf field being installed by SRI Sports, Inc. will be a mono-filament nylon 6.6 fiber knitted system that is 240' x 372'. The Astroturf 12XL system on a 26mm thick elastic layer is the top-of-the-line nylon turf system manufactured today. The entire field is placed over a free draining Dynamic Stone (porous stone) base with additional sub drainage. The turf surface is equipped with an underground manual irrigation system.
INSTALLATION TIMELINE
Construction on the Astroturf phase of the project began on Monday, May 5, 2003 and expects to be substantially completed by August 8, 2003. The new surface will be in place for the start of preseason field hockey practice, with the home opener scheduled for August 30, 2003 versus Siena College.
SITE LOCATION
The Astroturf field will be located in close proximity to the previous field hockey game field, with future phases of the project scheduled to include a natural grass competition soccer venue, stadium seating, spectator amenities and a joint press box.
