LEWISBURG, Pa. - With its major goal of winning another Patriot League title accomplished, Bucknell track and field will next head to the ECAC and IC4A Championships in Princeton, N.J., May 10-12. Nearly 50 individuals and six relays will make the trip in search of All-East honors and one last chance at qualifying for the NCAA East Preliminaries.
In addition to the ECAC Championships, the Bison will also send Beth Braunegg and Caroline Tolli to the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday to compete in the 1,500 meters.
SPRINTS/HURDLES
- Justin Hicks solidified his place as one of Bucknell's top sprinters all-time with his sweep of the 100 and 200 meters at the Patriot League Championships last weekend. The senior, who was later named the Bison Athlete of the Week, also set a school record in the 200 (21.16), while is 100-meter victory was his third straight this spring.
- Kamal Riley, who joined Hicks, Christian Lupica and Jacob Eaton Hall on the fourth-place 4x100 relay at the league meet, ran a pair of season bests in the 100 and 200 meters. His 100-meter time of 10.85 earned him second place behind Hicks, while his 21.56 placed him fourth.
- The short sprints could hardly have been much kinder to the women's squad as well. Kim Nagotko was second in the 100, an event in which she has never placed lower than fifth this year, and the 200. She was also on the 4x100 relay that took gold with a school-record 46.68 seconds.
- Nagotko has set four school records in the last three weeks. The sophomore took the top marks in the 100 (12.05) and 200 (24.59) at Bucknell Team Challenge on April 20. She was then a member of the 4x200 that set the record at 1:39.34 a week later at the Penn Relays and finally the 4x100 at last weekend's Patriot League Championships.
- The women's 4x100 relay has set a program top-10 time in four of five meets this season. The best marks still standing are the school record (46.68) and the No. 4 time set at the UMBC Invitational (47.93).
- The school record in the 4x100 was not the only standard to topple at the hands of Jennifer Zymet. The junior won her third consecutive 400 meter title in 54.98, making her the first Bison in program history to run under 55 seconds.
- Zymet is the third runner in Patriot League history to win at least three consecutive 400 championships. She joins Navy's Tineisha Davis who won four straight from 2002-05 and Army's Tanesha Hodge who won from 1992-94.
- Chrissy Haney was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Meet on Saturday thanks to her standout outing in the hurdles. The freshman won the 400-meter hurdles and took third in the 100-meter hurdles. In the longer race, her time of 1:01.34 gave her the third-fastest mark in program history and her first ECAC-qualifying performance. Haney's 15.11 in the 100 hurdles was also a season best.
- Haney gave Bucknell its fourth 400 hurdles champion in the last five years. Jamie Leacock won in 2009 and 2011, while Taylor Funk took the title last spring.
- Of those Bison on the current roster, only a select few have earned All-East honors in past seasons. Hicks received honors in the 100 meters in 2011. That same year, he also teamed with Marlon Woods, Riley and Isaih Bell to be named All-East in the 4x100.
MID-DISTANCE/DISTANCE
- The bulk of Bucknell's distances runners at the ECAC/IC4A Championships will come in two events - the men's steeplechase and the women's 10,000 meters. John Dugan, Robert Yamnicky and Tyler Erhard placed second through fourth, respectively, in the steeplechase at the Patriot League Championships and all three finished with season-best times. Yamnicky made the biggest improvement of the trio by finishing in 9:07.87, 16 seconds faster than his previous best.
- Montana DiPietrantonio, Zoe Gaston, Stephanie Bryan and Becky Snelson will all make their first ECAC Championships appearance in the 10K. DiPietrantonio, who ranks seventh in program annals with a career-best time of 36:33.77, and Gaston both registered their ECAC-qualifying marks at the Bison Outdoor Classic. Bryan and Snelson qualified with their performances at the Colonial Relays, where they placed second and third, respectively.
- Freshman Ryan Johnson waited until the last possible minute to qualify for the IC4A Championships in the 800 meters. His time of 1:51.51 at the league meet allowed him to qualify and placed him third at the championships. The time is also fifth on the program record list, moving him up from 10th.
- The women's 4x800 relay won yet another Patriot League title as Emily Waksmunski, Erin Horleman, Braunegg and Tolli combined for a time of 8:53.67. That time rank No. 4 at Bucknell. Waksmunski and Tolli are both on four relays that rank among the top 10 currently. That is the most of any athlete in the top 10.
- The 4x800 relay's time was the fastest on the women's side since they set the school record (8:44.94) at the 2012 Patriot League Championships.
- Tolli and Braunegg will both break off from their teammates to compete in the 1,500 at the University of Virginia on Saturday. Braunegg won the 1,500-meter title at the league championships in 4:35.98, while Tolli was second to her younger teammate in 4:36.50. Tolli was also the runner-up in the 800.
- Both the men's and women's 4x800 relays have had recent success at the ECAC/IC4A Championships. The women's relay was named All-East in 2011 thanks to Hana Casalnova, Waksmunski, Erin Holbrook and Tolli. Dustin Horning, Chris Oesterlin, Dennis Logan and Erhard earned All-East honors last spring.
JUMPS/POLE VAULT
- The Bucknell men totaled 184 points as a team at the Patriot League Championships. Of those points,107 came in the field events and 63 of those came in the jumps and pole vault.
- The men were dominant in the horizontal jumps as they placed four athletes in the top five in both the long and triple jump. Kevin Keller won the long jump and Ray Holmes was the victor in the triple jump, giving them both the indoor-outdoor sweep in their respective events.
- The men's triple jump did not change much from the indoor to the outdoor season. In both the winter and spring championships, Holmes was first, followed by Alex Prieto, Keller and Kevin Tapper in second through fourth.
- Alyssa Cardillo won her first career league title by taking gold in the long jump, but having a Bison at the top of the podium was not a first. Olivia Massey won the indoor long jump before placing fourth last weekend. Alexandra Romanelli won the indoor triple jump and took second outdoors.
- Cardillo logged a mark of 18-7 in the long jump, giving her a career best and the sixth-best mark in program history. The junior, who also won the Maroon & Gold Invitational one week before the league championships, entered the conference meet unranked at Bucknell in the long jump.
- Bucknell pole vaulters have collected plenty of silver recently. Nathaniel Witter was runner-up at the league meet as was Emily Ando, who has received Al-Patriot League honors in the event in each of the last two years.
THROWS
- Leonard Joseph continued to rack up the accolades with his Patriot League Championships performance. The senior was named the Field Athlete of the Meet after winning the hammer throw for the third consecutive year and taking fourth in the discus.
- Joseph's discus throw of 168-1 was a career best that moved him up to third all-time at Bucknell and gave him his first IC4A-qualifying mark of the season. He is one of two Bison to currently rank in the top 10 of both the hammer throw and discus, joining Tom Barr who is sixth in the discus (162-3) and eighth in the hammer (182-11). Joseph broke the school record in the hammer earlier this spring.
- Depth was a strong point for Bucknell in the men's shot put as the Bison placed five in the top seven of the event. Stephen Koullias was the runner-up for a second consecutive year, while Quinten Marcott and Brian Monahan were third and fourth, respectively. Luke Webster and Jack Fellows took sixth and seventh. In all, 19 points came from the shot put.
- Monahan and Webster both broke into the program's top 10 in the shot put this spring. Webster is sixth (52-4 ¾), while Monahan is eighth (52-1). Both also set top-10 marks in the discus this year with Webster taking over the school record (172-3) and Monahan moving into ninth (157-5).
- While the men had plenty of depth in the shot put, the women's side was all about Sophia Nnadi. The freshman won the event with a career-best throw of 45-3 ½. That moved her up from ninth to third on the program's top-10 list and gave her the indoor-outdoor championship sweep.
- Bucknell has won four of the last five Patriot League women's shot put titles. Nnadi is the first freshman to take gold in the event since Sarah Bella in 2009.
- Abby Monaghan has been the model of consistency in the discus. The senior set ECAC-qualifying marks in six of her seven meets. Most recently she placed fifth at the league meet with a throw of 149-4.

For those who qualify, the Bison will continue their season at the NCAA East Preliminaries. The qualifying meet for the National Championships run May 23-25 in Greensboro, N.C.
