LEWISBURG, Pa. - As the Bucknell baseball team prepares for this weekend's Patriot League Tournament series at Holy Cross, the Bison on Tuesday learned three of their players were named to the All-Patriot League Team. Junior designated hitter Corey Furman (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) was named to the First Team, while senior infielders Travis Clark (Foster City, Calif./St. Ignatius) and Carter Bumgardner (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) received Second Team recognition. Additionally, freshman pitcher Andrew Andreychik (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) was named the league's Rookie of the Year.
In addition to those four honorees, Bison Matt Busch (Roseville, Minn./Roseville), Dan Goldstein (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington), Jack McLinden (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Ignatius), Justin Meier (Clarendon Hills, Ill./St. Ignatius College Prep) and Dan Weigel (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) were named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team. Bucknell's five Academic All-Patriot League selections led the league, marking the second straight year the Bison have had the most honorees. Holy Cross and Lafayette each had two players named to the team.
All nine Bison honored on Tuesday received their first career postseason awards from the Patriot League.
Furman, who became a regular in the starting lineup for the first time this year, concluded the regular season with a .304 batting average, making him the lone Bucknell player to be above the .300 plateau. He began the year in the outfield, but moved to designated hitter for the majority of April and hit .338 during Patriot League play.
Furman enters the postseason on a team-best four-game hitting streak and has posted a team-high 15 multi-hit games while typically batting in the leadoff spot in the lineup. He has been hit by a pitch 16 times and owns a .395 on-base percentage.
A three-year starter at second base, Clark hit a team-high .346 during Patriot League play and is second on the squad with 14 multi-hit games this season. His 15 doubles this spring ranks eighth on the Bison single-season list, while he is in the top 10 on Bucknell's career lists for games played (8th, 163), games started (10th, 147), at bats (10th, 553), doubles (7th, 37) and hit by pitch (t-5th, 23).
Clark is second on the team to Furman in hitting this year with a .286 average. He has hit two home runs, driven in 19 runs and scored 28 while leading the team in stolen bases (11).
Bumgardner is in his second year as a Bison and had an outstanding regular season at third base. He hit .285 with one home run and a team-best 30 RBIs during the regular season. He is third on the team with 10 multi-hit games and paces the squad with nine multi-RBI outings.
Just the second Bison to earn Rookie of the Year honors along with Phil Futrick (2003) and Ben Yoder (2007), Andreychik was strong all year, but was especially effective during Patriot League play. He pitched the first shutout by a Bucknell freshman since at least 1979 against Army and earned three of his four wins against Patriot League opponents. Overall, Andreychik is 4-3 with a 3.88 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 48.2 innings. Thirty-two of those innings came during conference play.
Andreychik's Rookie of the Year honor prevented a sweep of the major awards by first-place Holy Cross. The Crusaders' Jordan Enos was the Player and Scholar-Athlete of the Year, John Colella was the Pitcher of the Year and Greg DiCenzo was Coach of the Year.
To be eligible for the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
Goldstein and Weigel combine to make up half of Bucknell's weekend starting rotation and are both in their second year as starters. Goldstein is 4-5 with a 3.76 ERA and a team-high 56 strikeouts, while Weigel is 2-7 with a 4.50 ERA and 53 strikeouts. Goldstein, a senior, is majoring in mathematics and is a two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member. Also a two-time PL Academic Honor Roll member, Weigel, a junior, is majoring in religion and philosophy.
Busch and Meier have both regular members of the Bison everyday lineup this spring. Busch, a senior, has seen the majority of his time in center field, while Meier, a junior, has made 35 starts behind the plate. They have combined for 43 hits and 24 runs scored. Both are two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll members. Busch is majoring in psychology, while Meier is majoring in accounting.
McLinden, a junior whose grade-point average is better than 3.8, is majoring in classics and religion. A two-time Academic Honor Roll member and a five-time Dean's List member, he posted a perfect 4.0 GPA last fall. A mid-week starter who has made nine appearances on the mound this spring, McLinden is part of the Mortar Board National Collegiate Senior Honor Society and he earned the Bucknell Emerging Leader Award in 2012.
Bucknell (16-31, 10-10 PL) will open the postseason this weekend when it travels to Worcester, Mass., to play a best-of-three series against Holy Cross. The first two games will take place Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday's game three, if necessary, will be played at 1 p.m.
