LEWISBURG, Pa. - With four top-three finishes and a school record at last weekend's Colonial Relays, Bucknell men's track and field's Christian Lupica was named the Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week on Monday. It was the first league honor of the outdoor season, but the third of the 2012-13 campaign, for the sophomore who now holds the Bucknell record in the 110-meter hurdles.
Lupica put together one of his most complete meets by finishing second in the 110 hurdles and third in the 400 hurdles, while also being a member of the winning 4x100 and second-place 4x200 relays. Lupica has placed third or higher in all seven races this season, a streak that also includes a trio of gold medals at the UMBC Big Dawg Invitational (110HH, 400H, 4x100).
On Saturday, Lupica took over the Bucknell record in the 110 hurdles, finishing in 14.25 seconds. The performance topped his former teammate Robert Arent's 14.31 set a year ago. Lupica also ran what was then a career best in the event's prelims, clocking in at 14.36, a time that ranked third in program history for less than 24 hours.
The 110 hurdles record is the first of Lupica's outdoor career. After two years, his name sits atop multiple indoor record lists, however. Lupica current ranks No. 1 in program history indoors in the 60-meter hurdles (8.04), 200 meters (21.55), 300 meters (34.77) and 4x400 (3:12.38).
Lupica's weekend also included a 400-meter hurdles time of 53.24 seconds. That put him in the No. 5 position on the Bucknell record lists. He anchored both relays, helping the 4x100 to a time of 41.53 seconds for the win. The 4x200 finished in 1:26.17.
Lupica found success in Williamsburg, Va., in yet another way as he achieved IC4A Championship-qualifying times in both hurdle races and the 4x100 relay. He and the rest of the Bison will look to build on their progress from last weekend when they host the Bison Outdoor Classic this weekend. Events begin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
