Bucknell Women's Tennis Hangs Around for 4-3 Win at Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Bucknell women's tennis captured its first Patriot League victory of the season, defeating Colgate 4-3 in Hamilton, N.Y., on Saturday morning. Stephanie Pino rallied in a second-set tiebreaker to clinch the victory for the Bison, which improve to 6-9 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Bucknell captured the doubles point but Colgate made up ground in singles play, eventually tying the team score at 3-3 with wins in the bottom half of the lineup. That set the stage for Pino, who defeated Katie Grant 6-4, 7-6 (1) in the No. 6 position. The straight-sets win was not straight forward, however. Pino led 6-4, 5-1 in the match before Grant took five of the next six games, forcing a tiebreak. The Bison freshman regrouped just in time to win the tiebreaker by a score of 7-1.
The Pino vs. Grant matchup was not the only battle on the day. Elena Vidrascu needed three sets to win her No. 1 singles match 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 over Kelsey Shea. Christie Schneider also found herself in a three-set match but fell 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 to Jennifer Ho.
Maria Cioffi made quick work of her opponent at No. 2 singles. The freshman defeated Alex Petrini 6-1, 6-0 to tally her 20th win of the season. At 20-11 on the year in singles, Cioffi is the first Bison to hit 20 wins since Lauren Lucido in 2010-11.
Cioffi and Vidrascu teamed up for the first win in doubles. The Bucknell duo defeated Meredith Rock and Shea, 8-2. Jen Bush and Elizabeth Morgan were also 8-5 winners over Jackie Finn and Ho at third doubles to give the Bison the early lead.
Bucknell will continue with Patriot League play next week when it hosts Army at 3 p.m. on April 13 at the Varsity Tennis Courts.
