LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Justin Hicks (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill School), a member of the men's track and field team, received a special award at the University's annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Bison Club and held in Terrace Room on Tuesday, April 30.
Hicks won the Bradley N. Tufts Award, presented "in recognition of exceptional athletic achievement and contributions to Bucknell athletics." Hicks shared the award with Sasha Hornock of the women's track and field team, who was the female selection.
Hicks has become one of the most accomplished sprinters in program history. The only athlete ever to be awarded both the Patriot League Rookie of the Meet and the Patriot League Track Athlete of the Meet indoors, Hicks is a four-time individual conference champion. His gold medals at the Patriot League Championships have come in the indoor 4x400 (2010) and 200 meters (2012), the 60 meters (2012, 2013) and the 100 meters (2011). His success at the various league meets have earned him First Team All-Patriot League honors five times and Second Team honors three times.
Hicks has left his mark on the record books, currently ranking first in the 60 meters (6.84) and the 4x100 (40.95). Those are not the only places his name is included in the program's top 10, however, as he also holds four of the five fastest marks in the 4x100 and is seven-hundredths of a second shy of the 100-meter record, ranking second. Outdoors, Hicks is also among the top 10 in the 200 as well as the 4x400. His top-10 times indoors include the 200 meters, 300 meters and several 4x400 relays.
With his individual success has come team success for the Bison. As a freshman, Hicks helped secure the first Patriot League outdoor track title since 1991, defeating Army by a slim three points. This weekend, Hicks and his teammates will be competing for a fourth consecutive team trophy. The Bison also collected an indoor league title in 2012, their first since 1993.
