LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex), a captain on the tennis team, received a special award at the University's annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Bison Club and held in Terrace Room on Tuesday, April 30.
Zimmer won the Ronald J. "Pete" Pedrick Award, presented "in recognition of demonstrated improvement and special contributions to Bucknell athletics over a four-year period." Zimmer shared the award with Alexandra Romanelli of the women's track and field team, who was the female selection.
After missing parts of his freshman campaign due to injury and starting his career at the No. 3 doubles position, Zimmer became one of Bucknell's most accomplished men's tennis players. He will graduate ranked second in program history with a combined record of 150-79. His 150 career victories would have tied the school record entering 2012-13 Zimmer not been topped by teammate Josh Katten's 155. Zimmer is also third all-time in doubles (80-39) and singles (70-40) wins.
Even more noteworthy than his career rankings, Zimmer owns the distinction of having been Bucknell's first-ever NCAA Tournament qualifier in men's tennis. As a junior, Zimmer teamed with Gregg Cohenca to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA championships and earned a national ranking as high as No. 58. That same season, Zimmer set the school record in single-season doubles wins, finishing with a mark of 31-7. He had entered his junior campaign with just 27 doubles wins in his first two seasons combined.
A two-time Second Team All-Patriot League and Academic All-Patriot League Team selection, Zimmer led Bucknell in singles wins with a 24-13 record. He was also 24-13 in doubles, including a 6-1 record at the No. 1 position with Aidan Lynch where he finished the season.
Zimmer will graduate in May with a degree in accounting having earned a 3.45 grade-point average as well as four selections to the Bucknell Dean's List and three more to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
Bucknell is a highly-selective, privately endowed liberal arts institution with an enrollment of 3,500 undergraduate students. Bucknell competes in NCAA Division I as a member of the Patriot League and has full membership along with American, Army, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy. Bucknell has won the Presidents' Cup, signifying the Patriot League's all-sports champion, in 17 of 22 years, including 13 of the last 15.
Bucknell annually ranks among the national leaders in graduation rate and is fifth in Division I in the total number of CoSIDA Academic All-America selections, with 123 national Academic All-Americans since 1970.
