LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Leonard Joseph (Whitesboro, N.Y./Clinton), a member of the men's track and field team, received a special award at the University's annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Bison Club and held in Terrace Room on Tuesday, April 30.
Joseph won the Bison Club Award, presented "to the senior athletes who best exemplify the winning spirit of the University's athletic program." Joseph shared the award with Liz Porcellio of the women's swimming and diving team, who was the female selection.
Originally recruited to Bucknell as a discus thrower, Joseph has instead made a major impact in the hammer throw. Earlier this spring, the native of Whitesboro, N.Y., set the school record in the hammer, throwing 209-11 and topping the previous standard that had stood for nearly two decades. Joseph, who has three hammer throw wins in four meets this season, ended his junior campaign on a high note. He placed 17th at the NCAA Championships in the hammer to earn All-America Honorable Mention accolades.
A two-time Patriot League champion in the hammer throw, Joseph received All-East honors at the IC4A Championships in 2012. His success has not been limited to the outdoor season, however. Joseph also has a Patriot League weight throw title to his name as well as two All-League citations in the winter. His success in the weight throw, an event in which he ranks second all-time at Bucknell, also includes an All-East award in both 2012 and 2013 after he won the hammer last winter at IC4As. Joseph was named the Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week four times during the 2012-13 indoor season. That improved his career total to eight, tying a conference record.
Joseph has been recognized for his success in the classroom. The psychology major has been named to the Bucknell Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll multiple times. He was also an Academic All-Patriot League Team and a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team selection on two occasions.
Bucknell is a highly-selective, privately endowed liberal arts institution with an enrollment of 3,500 undergraduate students. Bucknell competes in NCAA Division I as a member of the Patriot League and has full membership along with American, Army, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy. Bucknell has won the Presidents' Cup, signifying the Patriot League's all-sports champion, in 17 of 22 years, including 13 of the last 15.
Bucknell annually ranks among the national leaders in graduation rate and is fifth in Division I in the total number of CoSIDA Academic All-America selections, with 123 national Academic All-Americans since 1970.
