LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Caroline Tolli (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport), a captain on the cross country and track and field teams, received a special award at the University's annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Bison Club and held in Terrace Room on Tuesday, April 30.
Tolli won the Alvin F. Jackson, Jr. Memorial Scholar-Athlete and Christy Mathewson awards. The Jackson Award is presented for "outstanding academic and athletic achievement and future promise as Bucknell alumni," while the Christy Mathewson Award is presented to "the outstanding senior athletes." Tolli shared the Christy Mathewson award with Mike Muscala of the men's basketball team, who was the male selection. The male honoree for the Jackson Award was Christian Treat of the men's swimming and diving team.
Tolli made a bit of history by winning two awards on Tuesday night. She is just the 19th Bison in the 52-year history of the awards program to be recognized more than once. She is also first to do so in more than a decade and the fourth honoree to receive both the Alvin F. Jackson, Jr. Memorial Scholar-Athlete and Christy Mathewson awards.
Tolli will graduate as one of the most accomplished Bison in history both athletically and academically. The middle-distance runner has been named First Team All-Patriot League twice in cross country, twice in outdoor track and three times in indoor track. A team captain, Tolli has won five individual titles in track and field, including the mile, 1,000 meters and indoor 4x800 as well as the outdoor 4x800 twice. She has also been named All-East twice in her career, most recently in the mile at the 2013 ECAC Championships.
Tolli owns two school records as well as the Patriot League record in the outdoor 4x800. The latest record-breaking performance came at those 2013 ECAC Championships when she became the first Bison in program history to run under 4:50 in the mile, finishing in 4:49.99. In all, the senior ranks among the program's top 10 a total of 15 times across 11 events.
In the classroom, Tolli carries a perfect 4.0 grade-point average for her career while majoring in education and Spanish and minoring in Latin American studies. She is a seven-time selection to the Bucknell Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and has been voted to the Academic All-Patriot League Team six times in her career. A two-time Capital One Academic All-District Team selection, Tolli swept the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for indoor and outdoor track as a junior. In 2011, she received the President's Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement and the Charles F. White Memorial Prize for Student-Athletes.
