LEWISBURG, Pa. –Bucknell freshman pitcher Andrew Andreychik (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) was named the Patriot League Pitcher of the Week on Monday. He pitched a four-hit shutout Sunday in the series finale against Army as the Bison claimed a 5-0 win and pulled to within one victory of clinching a Patriot League Tournament berth.
The first Bison freshman to record a shutout since at least 1979, Andreychik retired the first nine Black Knights in order and did not allow a hit until the fifth inning as he won his third straight start to improve to 4-2 on the season. Army had more than one runner reach base in just two of the nine innings and Andreychik retired the final six hitters he faced.
Andreychik struck out a season-high eight and did work out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning thanks to a line-drive double play to second.
A right-handed pitcher, Andreychik is tied for the team lead in wins (4) and paces the squad with a 2.89 ERA. He has allowed just 40 hits and struck out 27 in his 43.2 innings.
Named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on April 8, Andreychik has been especially effective of late. He has yielded just 15 hits and two earned runs overs his last three starts (24.0 IP). Andreychik has allowed more than two earned runs in just one of his 10 appearances this season.
Bucknell will return to action Tuesday with its final non-league games of the season when it plays a doubleheader at St. Bonaventure at 2 p.m. The Bison will then wrap up Patriot League play this weekend when they host Lafayette in a four-game series at Depew Field. Bucknell needs one win vs. the Leopards to earn a postseason berth for the fifth time in the last six years.
