Bison Women's Tennis Tops Mount St. Mary's, Cold in 4-3 Victory

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell women's tennis took an unconventional route to its 4-3 victory over Mount St. Mary's at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Wednesday, but the effort paid off as the Bison are now 5-7 on the year. Jen Bush and Sam Madnick turned out to be the deciding match as the duo defeated the Mount at No. 3 doubles, while Lydia Colvin and Stephanie Pino were also responsible for two wins each.
Due to cold weather, the match began with singles play. Pino got off the court in a hurry, defeating Jennifer Smith 6-0, 6-4 at No. 6 singles. The Mount (5-7) took a narrow lead with wins in the next two singles bouts, but Maria Cioffi evened it up with a straight-sets decision of her own. The freshman collected her 19th singles win of the year with the 6-1, 6-1 victory over Samantha Pinchoff.
Lydia Colvin broke the tie with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles. That set the team score at 3-2 and left Elena Vidrascu battling in a three-set showdown against Kelly Conroy. With temperatures continuing to drop, Bucknell and Mount St. Mary's got a jump on doubles play before singles concluded.
Colvin and Pino teamed up for their 8-1 victory over Renee Deane and Carly Landini and the doubles point went to Bucknell as Bush and Madnick knocked off Liz Rossi and Smith, 8-3. It was the first time in their careers that Bush and Madnick had teamed up in doubles and gave Bucknell its 15th different tandem this spring.
With Bush and Madnick's win, Bucknell clinched the team match and improved the Bison's lead in the all-time series to 14-1. Vidrascu eventually finished her bout with Conroy, but after Vidrascu won the first set 6-4, Conroy closed it out 6-4, 7-6 down the stretch.
With the match already decided, first doubles was not contested. The Bison will go up against the cold and a new opponent tomorrow at a new time. Bucknell will host Villanova at 2 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Courts to close the book on its short homestand.
