LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell baseball team opened its home schedule Sunday and lost to Delaware by a 5-4 score in 11 innings after a ninth-inning comeback. Less than 48 hours after the conclusion of that game the Bison will be back on Depew Field as they will host Binghamton in a doubleheader Tuesday at 2 p.m. The doubleheader will feature a pair of seven-inning contests.
This will be the second straight year Bucknell and Binghamton have met at Depew Field. The teams split a doubleheader last year with the Bison winning game one by a 2-1 score and the Bearcats claiming game two by a 10-4 margin. The series began in 1991 and is tied 4-4.
Bucknell is 4-16 on the year, but its last three losses have come by just one run apiece. The Bison are led at the plate by Anthony Gingerelli (.357) and Carter Bumgardner (.347). Bumgardner has at least one hit in 11 of his 13 starts this year and was 7-for-13 (.538) this past weekend against Delaware. Corey Furman is hitting .280 on the season and owns a team-best six-game hitting streak. Joe Ogren has reached base in 12 consecutive games.
Bryson Hough (1-3, 4.70 ERA, 16 K), Dan Weigel (1-4, 5.18 ERA, 20 K) and Dan Goldstein (2-3, 4.04 ERA, 29 K) have earned Bucknell's four wins this year, although none are likely to see time on the mound Tuesday as they prepare for weekend starting assignments at Holy Cross. That trio has combined for 17 starts this year.
Binghamton, which has yet to play a home game, is 11-7 on the year. The Bearcats are averaging 6.8 runs per game and have a team ERA of 4.25. Five players have already reached double figures in RBIs, including Jordon Smucker, who is hitting .303 with three home runs and 24 RBIs.
After Tuesday's twinbill, Bucknell will prepare for this coming weekend's Patriot League-opening series at Holy Cross. The Bison and Crusaders will meet in a doubleheader Saturday at 3 p.m. and another Sunday at 12 p.m. All four games will be played at Fitton Field in Worcester, Mass.
