DES MOINES, Iowa - Wrestling at the NCAA Championships for the first time in his career, Bucknell sophomore Joe Stolfi posted an 8-4 victory over Bloomsburg's Justin Grant Thursday night, marking his first career win at NCAAs. With the victory, Stolfi advanced to the second day of competition at Wells Fargo Arena.
Stolfi, who fell to the consolation bracket after an 8-1 loss to sixth-seeded Bobby Telford of Iowa earlier in the day, continued his NCAA experience with the four-point win over Grant in their first-ever meeting. Stolfi scored six unanswered points during one stretch, tallying a reversal, a takedown and a pair of escapes after falling behind 2-0 in the first period. Grant entered the match with just five losses on the year.
Stolfi improved to 24-15 on the season with the win. He is now three victories away from guaranteeing a top-eight finish and All-America status. He will wrestle Indiana's 12th-seeded Adam Chalfant Friday morning. The two have already wrestled this year with Chalfant posting a 13-4 major decision during an early-December dual.
Stolfi is now 17-4 in his last 21 bouts and has not lost consecutive matches since early January. He is one of two Bison that qualified for the NCAA Championships along with 165-pounder Corey Lear, but Lear had to withdraw himself from the tournament last week due to injury.
The NCAA Championships will continue Friday and conclude on Saturday.
