HUMUCAO, Puerto Rico – Bucknell women's tennis snapped a three-match losing streak, righting itself in a 9-0 win over Minnesota State in Humacao, Puerto Rico, on Thursday morning. The Bison (3-6) swept their first opponent of the year as Maria Cioffi, Elena Vidrascu and Lydia Colvin each collected two victories.
Bucknell mixed up its doubles lineups and the move paid off for the early points. Cioffi and Stephanie Pino partnered for the first time since September, defeating the Division III Mavericks' Shealyn Bakke and Brandi Dohmen at No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-7.
It was the first time this spring that Lydia Colvin and Elena Vidrascu made up a doubles team, while Kristen Bishof and Claudia Silvers partnered for the first time as well. Colvin and Vidrascu won 8-3 over Kelly Lechowski and Sarah McCann. Bishof and Silvers won their third doubles bout by an identical score over Haily Robb and Alexis Ronney.
After securing the doubles points, Vidrascu, Cioffi and Colvin helped complete the victory at the top half of the singles lineup. Vidrascu won 6-2, 6-0 over Dohmen at No. 1 singles, while Colvin was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over McCann at No. 3.
All six singles bouts came in straight sets, but few were more decisive than Cioffi's. The freshman, who is now 5-4 in duals and 17-7 overall this year, did not allow Lechowski to hold serve even once and won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 position.
Rounding out the list of wins were Christie Schneider, Jen Bush and Sam Madnick. Schneider's 6-1 6-0 decision ended a five-match skid for the sophomore, while Bush avoided a losing streak of her own with the 6-4, 6-2 win over Alexis Haakedal at fifth singles. Madnick's 6-0, 6-3 win came in her first match of the spring campaign.
With its Spring Break trip to sunny Puerto Rico now at an end, Bucknell will turn its attention to its first home match since its spring opener on Feb. 2 when it hosts Mount St. Mary's at 3 p.m. on March 19 at the Varsity Tennis Courts.
