FAIRFAX, Va. – In a match abbreviated by cold weather, Bucknell women's tennis defeated George Mason 4-2 in Fairfax, Va., on Friday afternoon. Maria Cioffi clinched the victory in the super tie break for the Bison (4-6), which won their second consecutive match. Bucknell opens Patriot League play at Navy tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
With temperatures dropping as the day wore on, Bucknell and George Mason (5-9) skipped right to singles play, but action was not that straightforward. The Patriots won the first two matches in straight sets before Stephanie Pino got the Bison on the board with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Ekaterina Desiatnkova at the No. 6 spot in the lineup.
Bucknell then won the next three bouts to secure the win. Lydia Colvin was a 6-2, 7-6 winner at No. 3, but Elena Vidrascu and Cioffi had their work cut out for them at the top of the lineup. Both Bison forced super tie breaks after losing the first set. Vidrascu broke the 2-2 tie on the team score, winning 3-6, 6-2, (10-7) over Maya Hicks, while Cioffi defeated Brittany Pilkington 3-6, 6-3 (10-6) to end it all.
Cioffi is now 18-7 in singles this season. That wins total leads the Bison. Bucknell's victory over George Mason breaks a tie in the series, putting the Bison in front 3-2.
Bucknell will now make the short trip to Annapolis, Md., where it will take on the Midshipmen in the first conference bout of the spring. Navy is 17-3 on the year and enters tomorrow's match on a 15-match winning streak as a team.
