LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell women's golf team tees it up for the first time this spring along with 32 other teams at the Edwin Watts Kiawah Island Classic. The three-day, 54-hole event runs Sunday through Tuesday at the Oak Point and Cougar Point courses at the famed Kiawah resort.
This tournament annually features one of the largest fields in collegiate women's golf. This year the Bison will compete against Campbell, Central Arkansas, Charleston Southern, The Citadel, College of Charleston, Daytona State, Elon, Fairleigh Dickinson, Florida Gulf Coast, High Point, IUPUI, Jacksonville State, Longwood, Loyola (Ill.), Marshall, Middle Tennessee State, Newberry, North Florida, UNC Greensboro, Oral Roberts, Presbyterian, Radford, Richmond, Samford, St. John's, Stephen F. Austin, Tennessee Tech, Towson, Troy, Western Kentucky, Winthrop and Wofford.
Every team will play each course once over the first two rounds. In the third and final round, the top 18 teams will play in the championship flight at Cougar Point.
This will be the fifth straight year Bucknell has competed in this event. A year ago, Bucknell qualified for the championship draw for the first time after posting a stellar 298 in the second round, and the Bison went on to finish a best-ever 13th out of 33 teams. Kasha Scott paced the team on the final day with a 1-over 73.
Scott and fellow junior standout Bridget Wilcox will once again headline Bucknell's five-player lineup. The Bison will be without the third outstanding member of that junior class, however, as Lauren Bernard is out with a foot injury.
Sophomore Emily Timmons and freshmen Jen Lee and Meghan Garanich round out the Bucknell contingent.
Wilcox led the team with a 79.0 scoring average during the fall season. She scored in the 70s in 8 of 11 rounds, with a low of 76 in a ninth-place finish at the Bucknell Invitational. Scott posted the team's low round of the fall with a terrific 1-under 71 in the second round of Penn State's Nittany Lion Invitational.
Lee finished her first fall season on a high note, shooting 74-83 for a T-13th finish at the MAC Preview at the Longaberger G.C. in Ohio.
Bucknell was scheduled to play the Oak Point Course at the Palmetto Invitational back in October, but the Bison had to cancel the trip due to Hurricane Sandy.
Following the Kiawah Classic, Bucknell will host its Second Annual Bison Invitational at Paiute in Las Vegas starting March 14.
