PITTSBURGH - For the second match in a row, Nick Bybel collected two wins. The freshman's success was not enough to carry Bucknell men's tennis, however, as the Bison fell 5-4 to Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh on Friday night. Bucknell (1-1) took two of three doubles matches and Kyle Rosen joined Bybel in the wins column in singles.
Bybel and Josh Katten had a battle on their hands to collect the doubles victory. The duo defeated the Tartans' Duke Miller and Kosuke Hasegawa 9-8 at the No. 1 position. Kelly Morque and Evan Zimmer had just a slightly easier time at No. 2 doubles, beating Christian Heaney-Secord and Jooho Yu by a score of 8-6.
Both of Bucknell's winning doubles teams are enjoying success with their new partnerships during this dual campaign. It was just the second time this season for the Bybel/Katten and Morque/Zimmer combos. Both tandems are now 2-0.
Bybel continued his day with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles over Heaney-Secord. In two dual matches, the freshman has not more than two games to his opponent as he also defeated Saint Francis' Andres Rosa 6-2, 6-0 last weekend. Bybel is 9-3 on the year in singles, tying him for the second-most wins among Bison.
Also collecting a victory in the main lineup was Rosen at fifth singles. The sophomore snuck out the first set in a tie break but could not hang on to his momentum in the second. After seeing his match against Yu knot up 7-6, 2-6, Rosen rallied for a 6-3 win in the third and his first win of the spring.
Not the only Bison to push his match to three sets, Morque went the distance at No. 2 singles against Miller. Morque took the opening set in a tie break but slipped down the stretch, losing 6-7, 6-3, 7-5.
Octavio Canibe and Scott Bernstein took on a pair of Carnegie Mellon opponents in exhibition matches. Both Bison were winners in pro sets, Canibe by a score of 8-3 over Hasegawa and Bernstein at 9-8 over Paul Okuda.
Bucknell will remain in Pittsburgh for a 2 p.m. match tomorrow against Duquesne.
