DURHAM, N.C. - Three Duke pitchers combined on a two-hitter and the Blue Devils posted three multi-run innings as the Bucknell baseball team suffered a 9-0 loss Friday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field to open a three-game road set. Luke Lombardi and Matt Busch posted the only hits for the Bison, who trailed just 2-0 through five-and-one-half innings.
Trent Swart (1-0) pitched seven shutout innings for Duke (2-2), which beat then-No. 13 Florida last weekend. He allowed just the two hits and struck out 10. He retired 17 hitters in a row before exiting in favor of relievers Dalton Brown (eighth) and Sarkis Ohanion (ninth) for the final two innings. Brown hit a batter, while Ohanion walked a pair, but Bucknell could not advance a runner past second base.
Bryson Hough (0-2) started on the mound for Bucknell and yielded just three hits in 5.1 innings, but he walked five. A three-run double by Angelo La Bruna knocked him from the game in favor of Jack McLinden. The Blue Devils ended up batting around in the frame and scored five runs.
Duke, which initially got on the board with two unearned runs in the third, tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning for the final nine-run margin of victory.
Freshman Andrew Andreychik pitched the eighth inning for Bucknell and did not allow a run.
Bucknell and Duke will continue their series Saturday with a single game at 1 p.m.
