WEST POINT, N.Y. - With six events in the books, Bucknell women's track and field found itself with a slim lead over Lehigh at the Patriot League Championships at Gillis Field House on Saturday. The Bison, who are attempting to defend their indoor title from a year ago, was led by Olivia Massey with a first-place finish in the long jump.
Bucknell entered day two of the championship meet in second place, although just one event had been scored. The Bison moved into first after the long jump where Massey won her first career Patriot League title with a distance of 18-6 ½. Alyssa Cardillo put up the same distance to finish second and Alexandra Romanelli was fourth with a mark of 17-7 ½. With 22 points in that one event, the Bison took over the lead, two points up on the Mountain Hawks.
The Bison remained in front after the day's final event, the 4x800, but the lead had gotten even smaller at 1.67 points. The relay posted one of the top times in program history, clocking in at 9:04.07 to place second in the race. The time goes down as the eighth-fastest ever at Bucknell. It was the third program top-10 mark to go down on Saturday, joining Massey and Cardillo's distance in the long jump.
Massey became the first Bison this year to claim First Team All-Patriot League honors, while Cardillo was named to the second team for her performance in the long jump. Just missing out on all-league accolades was Emily Ando, who tied for third in the high jump, clearing 5-3. It was her second meet this season competing in the event. Abby Monaghan was fifth in the weight throw at 54-1.
Katie Jessee and Montana DiPietrantonio teamed up in the 5,000 to collect five more points for Bucknell. Jessee clocked in at 17:40.63 to take fourth, while DiPietrantonio was sixth in 17:59.70.
Several of the sprints got underway with their prelims on Saturday. Freshman Chrissy Haney advanced to the final in the 60-meter hurdles, taking sixth in the early races (9.57). In the 60-meter dash, both Sasha Hornock (7.81) and Kim Nagotko (7.83) moved through to the final as well, placing fourth and fifth, respectively, in the prelims.
A trio will represent the Bison in tomorrow's 200-meter final. Nagotko and Hornock will be joined by Jennifer Zymet having posted three of the top eight times in the prelims.
With most of the scoring still up in the air, Bucknell has 50 points through six events. Lehigh is in second with 48.33 and Navy is third with 42 points. No other team has more than 22. Competition begins again tomorrow 10 a.m.
