LEWISBURG, Pa. - Taylor Barnett broke a 9-9 tie with a six-on-five goal with 1:36 to play and Rena Heim's save on a six-on-five shot by Liz Rosen with less than a minute on the clock lifted the Bucknell women's water polo team to a 10-9 victory over Brown Saturday evening in Kinney Natatorium. The Bison finished the day 1-1 as they lost to George Washington by one goal earlier.
Bucknell led by as many as four goals (6-2) in the first half, but the Bears went on a 3-0 run sandwiched around halftime as the Bison didn't score for more than eight minutes. Brown eventually evened the score at 8-8 and 9-9 in the fourth quarter before Barnett and Heim came up big in the closing minutes.
Barnett was one of three Bison with three goals in the game and all three of hers came in the second half. All four of Bucknell's second-half scores came on six-on-five opportunities. The Bison were 6-for-9 in man-up chances.
Julianne Valdes and Krystle Morgan matched Barnett for team-high honors with three goals. Freshman Eleanor Marrs rounded out the offensive output with her first career goal.
Bucknell was forced to play the majority of the game without starter Mackenzie Ferry, who was whistled for her second ejection midway through the first period. As she was swimming toward the sideline an errant pass hit her in the head and she received a penalty.
Kate Woods led Brown (2-4) with three goals.
Saturday's game was part of the Bison Invitational that is taking place at Kinney Natatorium this weekend. Nine more games remain on Sunday's schedule. Bucknell will play Villanova (10:20 a.m.) and Marist (4:10 p.m.) to wrap up its opening weekend of the 2013 campaign.
