WEST POINT, N.Y. - Bucknell's Michaela Read collected the first all-league honor as the freshman took second in the pentathlon on day one of the Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championships at West Point, N.Y., on Friday. The rookie finished with 3,119 points to be named Second Team All-Patriot League. Sam Brandstadt kicked things off for the men's squad, moving into eighth place in the heptathlon with three events remaining.
Read put herself in second place from the beginning, getting off to a strong start in the 60-meter hurdles and high jump. She was the second finisher in each event, posting a time of 9.51 seconds in the hurdles and clearing 5-3 ¼ in the high jump, the best clearance by a Bison this year.
After two events, Read trailed Lehigh's Brooke Astor by 56 points and she got that differential down to 28 after the shot put. Read finished with a mark of 31-8 ¾. Astor gave herself some more breathing room in the long jump. Although Read was second in the field with a mark of 16-4 ¼, Astor was the top finisher in the long jump, extending her lead back up to 148 points.
Read finished her first Patriot League Championships with a time of 2:46.18 in the 800 meters. With her final point total of 3,119, Read now ranks ninth in program history. It is also the highest score by a Bison since former Patriot League gold medalist Amy Mantush, who ranks third in program history.
Brandstadt's first day in the heptathlon has seen him as high as sixth in the standings. The sophomore, who placed sixth in the event a year ago, was ninth after the first event, finishing the 60 meters in 7.58 seconds. He improved to sixth after the long jump with a distance of 20-2 ½ and his shot put mark of 36-3 was good enough to keep him in sixth.
A 5-8 ½ showing in the high jump dropped Brandstadt to eighth with 2,434 points. The heptathlon will conclude tomorrow with the 60-meter hurdles, the pole vault and the 1,000.
In addition to the heptathlon finale, the remainder of the individual events will get underway at 9:30 a.m. The championship meet runs through Sunday.
