YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Driven by a trio of individual wins from Leonard Joseph, Ryan Johnson and John Westwood, Bucknell men's track and field took a commanding lead at the Youngstown State National Invitational on Friday. After the first day of competition, the Bison lead second-place Duquesne by more than 50 points.
Joseph returned to the top of the podium in the weight throw with a distance of 59-8 ¼. Also scoring for the Bison in the event was Jack Fellows, who with a distance of 52- 10 ¼, finished fourth with a second consecutive career best.
Bucknell's other victories came on the track. Alex Jagelsky just missed defending his title in the 1,000 from this meet last year after being topped by freshman teammate Westwood. Westwood set a Watson and Tressel Training Site facility record with a time of 2:29.19. Jagelsky was second (2:33.29) overall, while Dustin Horning completed the sweep in third (2:34.06).
Johnson captured his first career win in the 500 meters. Like Westwood, Johnson also set a WATTS record, clocking in at 1:05.57. With several tight finishes, Jacob Eaton Hall was fourth in the event less than one second behind his leading teammate in 1:06.46.
Adding to Bucknell's early standout performances was a strong showing in the 5,000. The Bison placed three finishers in the top five, led by D.J. Krystek in second place at 14:49.23. Michael McGowan was third and Eric Balaban fifth. Also on the track, Bucknell placed second in the distance medley relay, clocking in at 10:22.13.
Bucknell was also bunched up in the long jump. Kevin Keller, Alex Prieto and Kevin Tapper went 3-4-5 in the event, and Ray Holmes added a seventh-place finish. Keller's team-leading mark was 22-2 ½.
With its depth, Bucknell jumped out to an early lead in the team standings. The Bison have already totaled 106 points. Duquesne currently sits in the second spot with 49.
