BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Over 6,000 runners from more than 450 high school and collegiate programs converged on Lehigh's Goodman Cross Country Course on Saturday, traveling to Bethlehem, Pa. to compete in the 40th Annual Paul Short Run, presented by Asics and Schuylkill Valley Sports. The Bucknell women's cross country team raced well in the unseasonably steamy weather, placing 29th in the women's Collegiate Gold race and turning in a slew of strong performances against some of the nation's top competitors.
"It was a solid race,” said head coach Kevin Donner, “although the heat took its toll and a couple of key runners were not able to finish. Pearse continues to run great, and DiPietrantonio and Jessee ran strong races as well. Adams ran well in the open competition, so that will help with our depth.”
For the second weekend in a row, junior Kylie Pearse was the first Bison to cross the finish line in the 6K race, placing 110th out of 406 runners with a time of 21:55. Junior Montana DiPietrantonio ran a time of 22:12, good for 145th in the highly competitive field, and classmate Katie Jessee finished just behind her in 22:16 to take the 157th spot. Junior Zoe Gaston (22:30) and sophomore Deanna Godby (22:51) also contributed to Bucknell's team score.
Dartmouth's Abbey D'Agostino was the overall winner of the event, turning in an impressive time of 19:44. No. 6 Georgetown claimed the team title with 112 points, while Dartmouth (125 points) and No. 12 Villanova (168 points) rounded out the top three.
In addition to the scored team race, 14 Bison competed in the Women's Open division of the Paul Short Run. Sophomore Nora Adams was the team's top finisher, finishing 47th out of 484 runners with a time of 22:37.
“After today, it looks like we have the potential to be in contention for the league title,” said Donner. “We will get back to work tomorrow and start to get ready for the championship portion of the season."
Bucknell will take a two-week hiatus before competing in the Leopard Invitational at Lafayette on Oct. 19, its final race before the Patriot League Championships.
