LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's Leonard Joseph (Whitesboro, N.Y./Clinton) became the all-time leader in Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week honors on Monday as he claimed the award for the eighth time in his career on Monday. The senior recorded the second-best weight throw mark in program history at the Bison Open & Multi to cap off one of his strongest weekends as a Bison. Also earning accolades on Monday was Beth Braunegg (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.), who was voted the Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week.
Joseph began his weekend at the Penn State National Invitational where he placed third overall in the weight throw. The finish came with a mark of 63-6 ¾, giving him a career best by more than six inches and keeping him firmly in the No. 4 slot on the Bucknell record list. One day later, Joseph returned to Gerhard Fieldhouse where he placed second overall, and first among collegiate competitors, with an even better throw of 65-0 ¾. With his first career throw at better than 64 feet, Joseph moved up to second in program history in the weight throw.
Joseph has now been named the Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week each of the last two weeks and four times this season. With eight career weekly honors, he passes former Bison Tyler Hoffman (2003-07) as the most decorated field athlete in league history.
Braunegg's Track Athlete of the Week award was the first of her career. The junior won the 1,000 meters and was a member of the distance medley relay that placed fifth at the Penn State National Invitational. Her times in both events rank among the top 10 in program annals. Braunegg's 1,000-meter victory came in a time of 2:53.03, ranking her second in the record books, while the relay's 11:50.29 is the fourth-fastest finish at Bucknell.
Bucknell is heading down the final stretch of its indoor season. The Bison have just two more meets before the Patriot League Championships in mid-February. Coming up next is the Youngstown State Invitational set for Feb. 1-2. The team will then wrap up its home schedule with the Bucknell Winter Classic on Feb. 9 at Gerhard Fieldhouse.
