Bucknell Men's Track & Field Repeats as Gulden Invitational Champs

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Powered by eight individual wins, Bucknell men's track and field took first in the team standings at the Gulden Invitational for a second consecutive year on Saturday. Among the individual winners were Kevin Tapper in the 400 meters and Luke Webster in the shot put, who also set two of the top marks in program history in their respective events.
"Our men showed tremendous depth in all of the event areas and had a fantastic meet," said head coach Kevin Donner after the meet. "I thought it was nice meet for us considering we are one month away from the Patriot League Championships."
Webster won the shot put with a throw of 53-4 ¼. The mark was a career best and, after not ranking in the program's top 10 prior to Saturday's meet, the senior moved up to No. 3 all-time at Bucknell. Tapper made a similar move in the 400. Also not previously ranked, the sophomore is now seventh in program history with a time of 49.31 seconds.
Lupica defended his title in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.17. The sophomore has now won the event in each of this two appearances at the Gulden Invitational. Lupica made it two wins on Saturday with a victory in the 200. His time of 21.84 set a new Gerhard Fieldhouse record and qualified him for the IC4A Championships in March.
Other winners on the track included D.J. Krystek in the 3,000 meters. He and John Dugan went 1-2 in the event with times of 8:43.63 and 8:49.62, respectively. John Westwood was the victor in the 800 meters (1:56.08) as well.
In the field events, Leonard Joseph won this third consecutive weight throw title this season. His mark of 62-10 ½ was his best of the year and just over one foot off his career record. The senior continued to dominate the competition as he was yet again well in front of his closest competitor. Second place in the weight throw on Saturday came in at just 54-1 ¾.
Jason Brown collected his first high jump win of the year, clearing 6-4 ¾.
The Bison also claimed nine more second-place finishes. That included the 4x400 relay, which qualified for the IC4A Championships with a time of 3:21.32.
Bucknell had a comfortable lead over second-place Shippensburg. The Bison totaled 224 points, while Shippensburg had 160. Duquesne was a more distant third place in the eight-team field with 75 points.
Bucknell will get back to work on Jan. 25-26 with the Bison Open & Multi and Penn State National Invitational.
