Bucknell Cross Country Sweeps Detroit Titan Invitational
9/8/2012 8:00:00 AM | Men's Cross Country
NORTHVILLE, Mich. - John Dugan (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) and Caroline Tolli (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) not only maintained their places at the front of the Bucknell cross country lineup, but the Bison duo also claimed their first meet wins of the season as the Orange and Blue swept the individual and team titles at the Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Dugan won the four-mile race in 20:31, while Tolli was the first finisher on the women's five-kilometer course in 18:27.
No one stood atop the podium more than the Bison on Saturday. In the team standings, the women took top billing in a field of 10 squads. Bucknell finished with 18 points as it took seven of the top eight individual spots in the race. Wayne State, the only school to break up Bucknell's lead runners, was second with 49 points, followed by Detroit in third with 90.
The Bison were also the winners in the men's team standings, totaling just 26 points to beat seven other schools. Wayne State was again second with 47 points, and Detroit was third with 62.
Tolli and Dugan both won their races easily. Tolli was 23 seconds ahead of teammate Katie Jessee (Concord, Mass./Concord Carlisle), who was second in 18:50. Tolli and Jessee have now finished 1-2 for the Bison in each of the first two meets of the season.
Dugan had an 11-second lead over his closest competitor on the men's side, topping second-place Nick Jackson of Wayne State (20:42). Like the women's squad, the Bison enjoyed some consistency from their top men's runners as D.J. Krystek (Pitcairn, Pa./Gateway Senior) was the second Bucknellian to finish. Krystek was fifth overall in 20:52. Just behind him was Michael McGowan (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) in seventh (20:57) and Andrew Garcia-Garrison (Detroit, Mich./Catholic Central) in ninth (21:05). Glen Williams (Landenberg, Pa./Kennett), who won last week's Bison Open, was 11th overall today in 21:11.
The front of the women's race was dominated by Orange jerseys. While Tolli and Jessee took the top two spots, Montana DiPietrantonio (Mount Laural, N.J./Bishop Eustace) was fourth overall with her 5K time of 18:59. Alison Billas (Danville, Pa./Danville Area), Betsy Edinger (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich Central), Beth Braunegg (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) and Meghan Carroll (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) placed fifth through eighth, respectively. In all, 10 of the race's first 15 finishers were Bison.
Bucknell will have a short break from competition then return to the course for the Saint Francis (Pa.) Invitational on Sept. 29 at Loretto, Pa.
