LEWISBURG, Pa. --The Bucknell women's golf team will look to improve on its season-opening performance when it travels to the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich., this weekend. Despite some strong individual performances two weeks ago, the squad came up a bit short in its quest for a third straight Bucknell Invitational title, and now the Bison will look to rebound this weekend in the two-day, 54-hole event, which will feature a very strong 14-team field at the University of Michigan Golf Course. Live updates will be available on GolfStat throughout the weekend.
This is the second time that Bucknell has competed in the Wolverine Invitational. In its previous invitation to Michigan in 2008, the tournament was shortened to just 18 holes as Saturday was a complete wash out. Bucknell posted a 324 on a long, wet course that year. This tournament has one of the tougher fields that the Bison women will face all year long, and their invitation back to Michigan is indicative of how well the team has performed in recent years.
This year's field includes heavy hitters such as Michigan, Illinois and Florida International, along with Akron, Butler, Delaware, Eastern Michigan, Ferris State, Georgetown, Grand Valley State, North Texas and Xavier. Five teams in the field were ranked in the top 85 nationally in the final 2012 Golfweek rankings.
Head coach Kevin Jamieson sends out a strong lineup of his own, however, led by the core trio of juniors Lauren Bernard, Kasha Scott, and Bridget Wilcox. Both Wilcox (9th) and Bernard (21st) finished in the top 25 two weeks ago at the Bucknell Invitational. Wilcox posted rounds of 76-77-78. Scott's final-round 75 was the best among all Bison players in the event.
Sophomore Lexi Klein and freshman Jen Lee are the other two players traveling this weekend. This will be Lee's first tournament playing as part of the top five. Competing as an individual in her first collegiate event, she opened with a 90 in the first round of the Bucknell Invitational, before fighting back and closing with a pair of strong rounds, firing 79-78. Klein had a consistent opening weekend in her first time out as a starter, with rounds of 80-83-81.
The teams will play 36 holes on Saturday followed by the final round on Sunday.
