Cioffi Wins First Two Career Titles, Leads Bucknell Women's Tennis at Mount St. Mary's Invite

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Maria Cioffi (Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) won both the singles and doubles draw as Bucknell women's tennis completed a successful run at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational in Emmitsburg, Md., on Sunday. Cioffi defeated teammate Elena Vidrascu (Rochester, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) in the Flight A championship bout, but Vidrascu was also on the winning side as she and Cioffi combined for a doubles title as well.
Cioffi has now made the finals in both singles and doubles in each of her first two intercollegiate events. Sunday marked the first time she had nabbed a title, however. The freshman's singles win came 6-3, 6-2 over Vidrascu after needing a super tiebreak to close things out against Megan Hahn of Loyola (Md.) in the semis.
Vidrascu and Cioffi played some tight matches in doubles. Their first-round match went their way 8-6 over Renee Deane and Jenny Smith of Mount St. Mary's. The semis were even more closely contended ending in a 9-7 victory over Hahn and Olivia Ott. Just as in Flight A singles, the championship was determined by a showdown of teammates. Cioffi and Vidrascu were 8-6 winners over fellow Bison Lydia Colvin and Alyssa McAndrew
With the doubles title, Vidrascu improves her career doubles record to 31-32. That wins total ranks her 22nd all-time at Bucknell. She is also tied for 22nd in career combined wins with a record of 62-61.
Bucknell placed three doubles tandems in finals. In addition to the Cioffi/Vidrascu vs. Colvin/McAndrew meeting, Ellie Fraser and Kristen Bishoff contended for a Flight B title. They were the second set of Bison to fall to the host school's Carly Landini and Liz Rossi, this time by a score of 8-1.
By the end of the tournament, Bucknell was represented with at least one player or doubles team in four of six draws. Stephanie Pino was a finalist in Flight C singles but fell 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 to the Mount's Jenny Smith. The Bison also claimed seven wins in the consolation brackets by the time play was completed.
The Bison will return home for their next round of competition, hosting the Bucknell Invitational at the Varsity Tennis Courts Sept. 21-23.
