LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell men's golf team posted a pair of sub-300 rounds on Friday as play began at the Bucknell Invitational. Led by a 69-71 start from individual leader Dan Bernard, the Bison are in second place in the team standings, four strokes behind Lehigh, with 18 holes still to come on Saturday.
Bernard is even par for the tournament, and he has the 36-hole lead by one shot over teammate Pete Scialabba (77-77), Jon Hartman (80-80) and J.J. Szmadzinski (81-85) also helped the Bucknell "Orange" squad post team scores of 296 and 299 on Friday.
Bucknell's "Blue" team is in fifth place after compiling rounds of 310 and 299. Freshman Luke Edelman (74-73) and sophomore Zach Pogust (75-75) both posted two rounds in the 70s, and both are currently in the top 10. Edelman sits in seventh place, while Pogust is T-10th.
Freshman Nick Geissler (81-74) and juniors Thomas Walter (80-77) and Billy Wright (81-81) round out the "Blue" squad.
Bernard's opening 69 is the only sub-70 round in the field so far, and it was the best competitive round of Bernard's collegiate career.
Lehigh received an even-par 70 from Andrew Arnold in the afternoon, helping the Mountain Hawks to a 297 team score after an opening 294. Canisius had the first-round lead after a 291, but the Golden Griffins slipped back to fourth after a second-round 310.
One shot behind Bucknell in third place is Laval at 596 total.
The third and final round gets underway on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Bucknell Golf Club.
