LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Senior Dan Bernard claimed the individual title and the Bucknell men's golf team showed off its depth on Saturday, as its two five-man teams claimed the second and third places at the Bucknell Invitational. Bernard posted rounds of 69-71-76 to win medalist honors by two shots over freshman teammate Luke Edelman.
The Bucknell "Blue" team, the younger of the two Bison squads with two freshmen, a sophomore and two juniors in the lineup, shot 289 in Saturday's final round, the best team score in the field all weekend. Edelman, playing in his second career event, shot 74-73-71 for a 54-hole total of 218. That put him in sole possession of second place.
Edelman produced one of three final-round 71s for the Blue squad. Sophomore Zach Pogust and junior Thomas Walter also finished at 1-over-par 71. Pogust had carded a pair of 75s on Friday, and he finishes in a tie for fifth place, his career best finish. Walter finished T-15th in a strong performance just two weeks after an appendectomy.
Also for the Blue squad, junior Billy Wright closed with a 76, while freshman Nick Geissler added a 77.
Bernard was the story for the veteran "Orange" team, which began the day four shots behind Lehigh but fell back to third place with a final-round 308. Bernard's victory was the first of his career, and he is Bucknell's first individual winner since Andrew Cohen captured the Lafayette Invitational in the Spring of 2010. The last Bison to win the Bucknell Invitational was Cohen in 2009.
Pete Scialabba was the Orange team's low man on Saturday with a 75, followed by Bernard at 76 and J.J. Szmadzinski with a 77. Jon Hartman carded his third straight 80.
Lehigh finished with a 296 to hold on to first place in the team standings. The Mountain Hawks compiled an 887 total, besting the Bucknell Blue (898), Bucknell Orange (903), Laval (905), Canisius (906), Colgate (931), Messiah (937) and Hampton (1003).
Bucknell will be back in action next weekend at the Cornell Invitational.
