LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell women's golf team looks to continue a strong spring season this week at the Big South Championship, presented by Musco Sports Lighting. The three-day, 54-hole event gets underway Monday morning at The Patriot Club in Ninety-Six, S.C. The Bison, who turned in a best-ever third-place finish one year ago, are seeded fifth this season.
The Patriot Club is hosting the Big South Women's Golf Championship for fourth year in a row and sixth time overall. For the opening round, Bucknell will be paired with fourth-seeded Gardner-Webb and sixth-seeded Winthrop, with tee times starting at 9:30 a.m.
Campbell, which is in its first season back in the Big South after 17 years competing in the Atlantic Sun, is the 10-team tournament's No. 1 seed based on its Golfweek national ranking of 58. Defending champion Coastal Carolina is 63rd in the Golfweek rankings and is the No. 2 seed. Charleston Southern (143) is third, followed by Gardner-Webb (159), Bucknell (161), Winthrop (162), Radford (173), High Point (179) and Holy Cross (251). Presbyterian, ranked No. 174, will participate in the event but is not eligible for the championship due to its transition status to Division I.
Fans can follow the action online via GolfStat's "Live Scoring" feature. The 2012 champion will receive the Big South's automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.
Bucknell kicked off the spring with a best-ever 13th-place finish at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic, the largest collegiate event in the nation. The Bison qualified for the championship flight in the final round for the first time and finished second among the seven Big South Teams in the field. Senior Minjoo Lee posted a T-17th finish to lead the squad.
The Bison went on to finish fourth out of 18 teams at the inaugural Bison Challenge at Paiute in Las Vegas, followed by a ninth-place finish at the UNCW Lady Seahawk Classic. A 1-under 71 by sophomore Bridget Wilcox was the highlight of the UNCW tourney.
Seniors Lee and Brittany Rendell along with sophomores Wilcox, Kasha Scott and Lauren Bernard will go after Bucknell's first conference title starting on Monday.
Lee earned All-Big South honors with a fourth-place finish in 2010, while Bernard garnered an all-conference plaque with a school-record second-place finish last year.
