NINETY-SIX, S.C. -- The Bucknell women's golf team got out to a bit of a slow start at the Big South Championship, presented by Musco Sports Lighting, on Monday morning. The fifth-seeded Bison, who finished a best-ever third at this event a year ago, stand in seventh place after posting a 320 in the first of three rounds.
Bridget Wilcox paced Bucknell with a 77 in round one. Wilcox pencilled 13 pars and five bogeys on her card, and she stands in a tie for 15th place individually. Minjoo Lee, an All-Big South performer two years ago, posted a 79, followed by Kasha Scott with an 81, Brittany Rendell with an 83 and 2011 Big South runner-up Lauren Bernard with an 83.
Bernard birdied holes 2 and 5 to get to 1-under par, and she was 1-over after a 37 on the front nine, but she struggled coming in. Lee, Wilcox and Scott all finished strong, shooting 38s on the back nine.
Tournament favorite Campbell shot 294 on Monday to take a four-shot lead over defending champion Coastal Carolina. Gardner-Webb is third at 307, followed by Radford (310), Winthrop (313), High Point (314), Bucknell (320), Charleston Southern (321) and Holy Cross (395). Presbyterian, which is in the field but not yet eligible for the championship while in its transition phase to Division I, posted a 318.
Michelle Koh of Campbell posted a 1-under 71 to take a one-shot lead over teammate Teresa Urquizu. Jessica Campbell of Coastal Carolina and Kaylin Yost of Campbell are tied for third at 1-over 73.
Round two gets underway Tuesday morning at The Patriot Club.
