LEWISBURG, Pa. - Ryan Ebner and Jack Boehm combined on a perfect game through 4.2 innings and Bucknell's offense plated a total of nine runs in the sixth and seventh innings as the Bison baseball team defeated Lock Haven by a 10-3 score Tuesday afternoon at sunny Depew Field. Bob Donato, Colby Vanderbeck and Will Mooney each posted a two-run hit to lead the Bucknell offense.
The Bison capitalized on 11 walks by the Lock Haven (10-18-1) pitching staff. Five of the walks came around to score and Bucknell plated three runs in the seventh inning on bases-loaded walks.
The game was a low-scoring affair over the first five innings as the Bison led 1-0 and the teams had combined for just three total hits to that point. Ebner, who started on Sunday vs. Holy Cross but threw just 1.1 innings, got the start and retired all nine Bald Eagle hitters he faced. Boehm then came on and sent down the first five hitters he faced before giving up the first of three Lock Haven hits in the game to Jose Diaz.
The Bald Eagles plated three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. Two runs scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch by Boehm. Josh Jones scampered home from third and catcher Justin Meier's throw to a covering Boehm bounced off Jones' foot, enabling Jay Hartman to run home. Cory Dorman then singled up the middle off Jack McLinden to drive home Ryan Henritzy. That was the last hit of the game for Lock Haven as McLinden, Dan Goldstein and Taylor Runge pitched a scoreless final 3.2 innings.
Bucknell did not trail for long as it scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Robb Scott drew a one-out walk to get things started. Russell Seidell followed with a double, while a walk by pinch hitter Mark Figgie loaded the bases. Vanderbeck, another pinch hitter, hit a double off the right-center field wall to drive home two runs. Donato followed with a two-run single past a diving Jones at third.
The Bison bats stayed hot in the seventh as Bucknell sent 10 hitters to the plate and scored five more runs. Pinch hitters Rob Krentzman, Gerry Runyan and Matt Lamore each drew a bases loaded walk, while Will Mooney doubled down the right field line to round out the scoring.
Bucknell did get two on and none out in the bottom of the eighth, but a line-drive double play to shortstop cut the rally short.
Lock Haven used four pitchers in the game and reliever Kyle Schubert (0-2) was tagged with the loss. He pitched 3.2 innings and yielded three hits, four runs and three walks while striking out two.
With his two RBIs Tuesday, Donato upped his career total to 99, moving him into 10th place in program history. He has a team-high 25 RBIs this season.
McLinden's victory on the mound was the first of his career. His ERA dropped to 4.50 on the year in five appearances.
The three hits the Bison pitching staff yielded was a season-low figure. The previous low was five hits to James Madison and Saint Joseph's.
Bucknell's win evened its home record this year at 5-5. The Bison play eight of their next 10 at Depew Field.
Both teams substituted liberally in the contest. By the end, the only Bucknell starter still in the game was Travis Clark. Lock Haven had reserves in at six of the nine spots in the batting order.
The Bison will be in action again on Wednesday when they travel to College Park, Md., for a 6 p.m. game against Maryland.
