Bucknell Men's Track & Field Powers Through at Penn Relays, Dominates Maroon & Gold Invite

PHILADELPHIA - Bucknell men's track and field split squads between the Penn Relays and Bloomsburg's Maroon & Gold Invitational on Friday, but the Bison's success was not diluted by distances. Stephen Koullias and Luke Webster posted eighth-place finishes in the shot put and discus, respectively, at the Penn Relays, while Bucknell collected eight victories at Bloomsburg. The Bison will wrap up competition at the Penn Relays tomorrow.
Bucknell's day at the Penn Relays focused on the throwers on Friday. Koullias led the group of Bison shot putters with a throw of 51 feet, 7 ¼ inches, to give him the team's only top-10 finish in the Eastern division. Tom Barr and Quintent Marcott were not far behind, however. Barr was 12th at 50-4, while Marcott came in with a 13th-place finish at 50-2 ½.
Webster also put up a strong showing in the college division of the discus. The junior, who will attempt to defend his Patriot League title in the event at next weekend's championship meet, put up a mark of 163-2 this evening.
At the unscored Bloomsburg meet, Bucknell totaled eight individual wins. Among them were Daniel Markwalter, Kevin Keller and Alex Prieto, who helped the Bison dominate in the jumps. Markwalter was the victor in the pole vault (14-7 ¼), Keller won the long jump (21-10 ¾) by a mere three-quarters of an inch over second-place teammate Kevin Tapper and Prieto took the top spot in the triple jump (45-5 ¼).
On the track, Bucknell won events as short as the 100 meters and as long as the 5,000. Patryk Najbar and Greg Barbier went 1-2 in the 100 meters with Najbar coming out on top with a time of 10.98 seconds. The 5,000 went to Dan Dillon with a time of 15:20.63. The senior bested his closest competitor, teammate Eric Balaban, by 10 full seconds. Bucknell also took the third-place slot in the 5K thanks to Glen Williams.
The Bison put together an even more impressive sweep in the 800 meters as they collected each of the top six places. Chris Oesterlin led the pack in 1:57.40. He was followed in order by Dustin Horning (1:57.67), Dennis Logan (1:58.49), Gary Bush (1:58.99), Tyler Erhard (1:59.28) and Andrew Garcia-Garrison (1:59.48). No runner from another school broke the 2:00 mark.
Also earning wins for Bucknell on Friday were Brian Charland in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:36.42) and Jack Fellows in the shot put (48-6).
There Bison will be back in action tomorrow on the final day of competition at the Penn Relays. Laddie Trees will compete in the college javelin, Barr in the college hammer throw and Leonard Joseph in the championship hammer. The remaining Bison will have to wait until May 4-5 to get back on the track and contend for a third consecutive Patriot League Championship in Worcester, Mass.
