LEWISBURG, Pa. - For a second consecutive year the Bucknell football spring game was played in less-than-stellar weather Saturday evening at rainy Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Last year's contest was halted just after halftime due to a thunderstorm that brought lightning to the area. Saturday's game was played to the end, but a steady rain caused some difficulty handling the football in the Orange team's 16-0 victory over Blue.
A number of passes slipped through receivers and defenders hands as the two squads were a combined 2-for-22 on third downs and punted 12 times.
Some modified rules gave plenty of advantages to the defense as there was a quick whistle on the quarterbacks, which helped produce 14 total sacks, and the squad's seven offensive linemen and select tight ends did not get a break on the sidelines as they were playing for both teams. Additionally, the contest was played with a running clock.
RB Charles Thompson was the offensive star for Orange as he rushed 15 times for 93 yards, including a 36-yard score that featured a nice stiff-arm on a defensive back just before he reached the end zone. Thompson also caught three passes for 15 yards.
QB Trey Lauletta completed 10 of 23 passes for 136 yards for Orange, including a 41-yards strike to Jake Hartman and a 40-yard completion to Brandon Pinnock. Lauletta completed passes to six different receivers.
Four different kickers scored points for Orange. Alex Eckard (21 yards) and Sean Cobelli (27 yards) connected on first-quarter field goals, while Stefen Laukien made a 37-yard field goal in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter. Blair Gatewood knocked home the extra point after Thompson's touchdown early in the second quarter.
While Blue yielded 16 points, its defense did record nine sacks and 11 tackles for loss. James Carson and Dylan McDonnell posted three sacks apiece, while Donald Quarles and Carson both registered a team-high five tackles.
Beau Traber had two tackles for loss, four tackles and a fumble recovery to top the Orange defense.
The spring game marked the final of 15 spring practice sessions for the Bison, who will open their 2012 campaign Sept. 8 at Marist.
