LEWISBURG, Pa. - Following up a run in which he went a perfect 4-0 on the court, Bucknell men's tennis' Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) was named the Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday. Katten capped off his week with a tough three-set singles win at Lafayette to keep himself undefeated in Patriot League play this spring. The award is the first of the junior's career.
Katten won both his singles and doubles matches against Patriot League opponents from Army and Lafayette last week. He kicked things off with partner Evan Zimmer in a 9-7 doubles battle at Army. The victory helped the Bison to the doubles point against the Black Knights, although the Bison eventually fell 5-2. Katten later defeated Army's Alex Holland at No. 3 singles to secure that second team point for Bucknell.
Katten remained undefeated a few days later when he and Zimmer cruised to an 8-2 win over Lafayette. The Bison duo is a perfect 7-0 overall and 4-0 in Patriot League matches when playing together. Katten has won each of his last eight doubles matches, starting the streak with Kelly Morque. He is 21-9 in doubles this year.
A 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win over Lafayette's Brandon Goldstein capped off Katten's week. That gave Katten his eighth win in 10 matches and improved his overall season record to 21-9. His 21 singles victories leads all Bison this year.
The Bison Athlete of the Week honor is the first of Katten's career. He is just the second men's tennis player to be recognized since at least 2004-05 with the first being teammate Gregg Cohenca on Feb. 13, 2011.
After defeating the Leopards as a team 6-1, Katten and the rest of the Bison will attempt to keep their momentum on Tuesday when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to take on Lehigh. The match is set for a 3:30 p.m. start.
