LEWISBURG, Pa. - For the first time this season and the second time in his career, Bucknell track and field's Leonard Joseph (Whitesboro, N.Y./Clinton) was named the Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week on Monday. The junior was the top collegiate hammer thrower at last weekend's Bison Outdoor Classic and posted a career-best 200-1 in the process.
Joseph placed second overall but first among collegiate competitors in the hammer throw on Sunday. At 200-1, he is just the fourth Bison in program history to clear 200 feet in the event and currently ranks fourth on the record list. He also qualified for the IC4A Championships for the second consecutive meet.
Joseph, who qualified for the NCAA Championships in the hammer throw last spring, also competed in the discus last weekend and placed ninth overall. He finished with a throw of 154-10.
The Patriot League honor is the first this season for Joseph and Bucknell's first for a male field athlete. Joseph was also named the top field athlete outdoors at last year's Bucknell Team Challenge when he won the hammer throw with a then-personal-best 193-1, becoming the first Bison to surpass the 190-foot mark.
Joseph will have a chance to defend that hammer throw title when the Bison host the Bucknell Team Challenge on Saturday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The day will also feature Senior Day ceremonies and a 30-year reunion for the 1981-82 cross country and track and field teams.
