EMMITSBURG, Md. - In his fifth career start on the mound, and first since 2010, Bucknell senior left-handed pitcher Russell Seidell carried a shutout into the ninth inning Tuesday afternoon at Mount St. Mary's as the Bison came away with a 7-3 victory over The Mount. Bob Donato hit a three-run home run and Matt Lamore collected three hits to pace the Bucknell offense.
Seidell was masterful on the mound as he pitched a career-high 8.1 innings and scattered 11 hits while striking out one and walking one. The Bison led 7-0 entering the bottom of the ninth when Seidell went back out to go for his first career complete game. He retired the first hitter in the inning before yielding three straight hits. Marcus Garone and Alex Cillo recorded to final two outs to end the game.
Seidell (1-0) was coming off a strong 5.1-inning outing last week in Florida when he came on in relief against Bradley. He now has a 3.21 ERA this season in three appearances (18.0 IP) on the hill. He is also hitting .342 at the plate when he plays first base.
Bob Donato provided early offense for Bucknell (9-8) as he hit a one-out three-run home run in the top of the third. It was his team-high sixth of the year and the 23rd of his career. Donato, who has driven in a team-high 21 runs this season, ranks fourth on the program's all-time home run list, just one behind former professional player Jason Buursma.
The Bison tacked on a run in the top of the fifth when Lamore and Rob Krentzman started the frame with back-to-back singles before being bunted over by Robb Scott. Donato then plated Lamore on a sac fly.
The very next inning Travis Clark was hit by a pitch and Gerry Runyan walked and both later scored on a double by Lamore, the only Bucknell player with a multi-hit outing.
The Bison loaded the bases in the eighth, but were unable to push across a run. They did add an insurance run in the ninth when Donato drew a one-out walk and later scored on a David Duffett double. Duffett's late hit extended his hitting streak to nine games and kept his batting average over .400 (.408).
Mount St. Mary's (5-14) freshman starter Thomas Williams (1-1) pitched 7.0 innings and gave up six hits and six runs. Two relievers pitched the final two innings and held Bucknell to one hit and one run while striking out four.
The Bison have now won two games in a row and they improved to 4-1 on the road this year. Bucknell will play three more road contests this weekend at Saint Joseph's before commencing a seven-game homestand next Tuesday vs. Binghamton.
