LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's tennis team (5-7) won an important No.1 doubles match to help take the team doubles point in a 5-2 victory over Duquesne (10-4). The Bison played Duquesne in its first home match of the spring season and two days after its last victory in Orlando, Fla.
Doubles partners Gregg Cohenca and Evan Zimmer won their back-and-forth No. 1 doubles match, which provided the Bison with an early 1-0 lead over the Dukes. Bucknell had previously won the No. 3 doubles match, making the No. 1 doubles an essential victory for the team.
Cohenca and Zimmer lost the first game and then won the next three straight games over opponents Max Rubin and Rich Robbie. Rubin and Robbie responded with six straight game wins taking the score to 7-3 in favor of the Dukes' duo. Cohenca and Zimmer then rallied from being down four games to bring the score to a tie, 7-7. After losing the next game, Cohenca and Zimmer managed one more rally to win the final game and tiebreaker, taking the match 9-8.
The men's team showed determination in the singles matches with three of the Bison players beating out their opponents in three-set matches. Kyle Rosen defeated Mehdi Mekaoui by the score of 5-7, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) and Gregory Maxson won his three-set match 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 clinching the team win for the Bison.
