Bucknell Women's Water Polo Concludes Roadrunner Invitational with Two Losses

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. –The Bucknell women's water polo team concluded the Roadrunner Invitational Sunday with losses against No. 19 Long Beach State and host Cal State Bakersfield. The Bison lost to the nationally ranked 49ers by a 9-5 margin, while they dropped the nightcap to the Roadrunners, 9-7. Bucknell concluded the two-day event with a 2-2 record and it is now 10-10 on the season.
Julianne Valdes (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep), who totaled four goals and one assist on the day, was the only Bison to post a multi-goal outing as she tallied a team-high three goals in the loss to Cal State Bakersfield. Barbara Peterson (Palo Alto, Calif./Castilleja) was the only other Bucknell player to score at least one goal in each contest.
Taylor Barnett (Houston, Texas/Clear Lake), the team leader in goals with 32 on the season, did not net a goal on Sunday, but she did draw a team-high seven ejections, including four opposite the Roadrunners.
Rena Heim (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) totaled 14 saves on the day against 18 goals allowed.
Bucknell faced an early three-goal deficit at the conclusion of the first quarter against Long Beach State, but was able to hold the 49ers in check on six-on-five opportunities, not allowing a goal in eight chances.
The Bison jumped out to an early 3-2 lead against Cal State Northridge, and the score was still tied 3-3 at halftime, but the Roadrunners held a 6-4 second-half edge, including 4-1 in the third period.
Bucknell will next be in action Tuesday at 5 p.m. Eastern at Cal State Northridge.
