LEWISBURG, Pa. - Powered by 16 points from Rachel Voss (Cincinnati, Ohio/Loveland) and 16 rebounds from Lindsay Horbatuck (Avon, Conn./Avon), Bucknell women's basketball snapped a 13-game losing streak with a 67-45 victory over Colgate at Sojka Pavilion on Wednesday night. The win was the first of the Patriot League campaign for the Bison (3-21, 1-8 PL), which grabbed a season-high 58 boards and dished out 22 assists in what was perhaps their best performance of the season.
Horbatuck put together one of the most impressive all-around games of her career. The junior's 16 rebounds tied a career high, while her five assists was a new personal high mark. She also added nine points, three steals and one blocked shot.
Horbatuck's effort on the boards led the Bison in their rebounding dominance throughout the game. Bucknell's 58 total rebounds set a new Sojka Pavilion record and are the most since Jan. 18, 2002 when the Bison also grabbed 58 boards at American. The team's 23 offensive rebounds and 35 defensive rebounds were both one shy of the Sojka Pavilion record as well. Colgate (5-19, 2-7 PL) was limited to 33 rebounds on the night, including 15 in the first half.
Hustle was the name of the game early on. After a bit of back-and-forth play in the first three minutes, Bucknell broke free with a fast-paced 20-3 run. That gave the home team a 23-7 advantage on the scoreboard and it never looked back. Six different Bison scored, including Alyssa Dunn (Mason, Ohio/Seven Hills School) who tallied eight of her 12 points, during that streak. Bucknell also outrebounded Colgate 7-2 during that same time as the Raiders shot just 1-for-6 from the field.
The run successfully put Bucknell out of Colgate's reach for the remainder of the game. Although the Raiders were able to score a bit more freely as they approached halftime, the Bison still outscored them 41-24 in the first half.
Bucknell's 41 first-half points were a season high and was a departure from recent low-scoring games that have given the team a 50.0 scoring average for the season. The Bison's point total came on 44.4 percent (16-for-36) field goal shooting. The Raiders finished the first half at 25.8 percent (8-for-31).
The second half opened with Bucknell going on a 10-2 run. Although the Bison's scoring clip eventually slowed down, they were never in any danger of giving up their lead. Voss very quietly improved her point total to 16 on 8-for-13 (.615) shooting. The junior has now scored in double figures in each of her last five games, giving her a 13.4 average during that stretch.
Voss gave Bucknell its largest lead of the night at 27 points on a layup at 13:18 for a score of 55-28. The bucket came on an assist from Horbatuck, who shared the team high of five assists with Christina Chukwuedo (Monessen, Pa./Monessen). As a team the Bison tallied 22 assists, surpassing their previous season high of 16, which was also set against Colgate in January. Bucknell closed out the evening shooting 42.0 percent, while its 29 made field goals and 69 attempts were both season highs.
Voss' 16 points led all players. She was joined in double-digit scoring by Dunn with 12 and Shelby Romine (Centreville, Va./Westfield) with 11.
Dunn also nabbed four steals, and Bucknell totaled 20 points off turnovers compared to just one for Colgate. The Bison also enjoyed a comfortable edge in points in the paint, 40-16, and bench points, 22-6.
Jhazmine Lynch led Colgate with 15 points, 11 of which came in the first half, eight rebounds and six steals. Her three blocked shots and three steals were also team highs. Lynch was 3-for-18 from the field and 8-11 from the free throw line, accounting for all of her team's foul shot attempts.
The win marked a handful of milestones for Bucknell. With the outcome, Bill Broderick claimed his first victory as the Bison's interim head coach since taking over the helm on Jan. 14. Bucknell also ends what was tied for the second-longest losing streak in program history at 13 games and extends its home winning streak against Colgate to eight games.
Bucknell will look for a second straight win, and its first on the road, when it makes the short trip to Lafayette on Saturday. Tipoff between the Bison and the Leopards in Easton, Pa., is set for 3 p.m. Lafayette snuck through with a four-point victory when the two teams met in January.
