LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell sophomore Julianne Valdes (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. Valdes totaled seven goals, six assists and 11 ejections drawn to help the Bison to a 4-1 weekend.
A starter in all five games over the weekend, Valdes posted three multi-goal outings and more than doubled her season goal total from five to 12. The team's second-leading goal scorer a year ago, Valdes now ranks fourth on the team in goals and second in assists (12) this season.
Valdes' 13 points over the weekend moved her past the 100-point plateau for her career. She now has 109 points in her 44 career games played.
After sprinting just three other times in her career entering the weekend, Valdes claimed 10 of 12 sprints during the five games.
Perhaps her best performance of the weekend came against nationally ranked Iona. Valdes registered two goals, two assists, two steals and four ejections drawn in that contest.
Valdes and the Bison opened the weekend with a loss to No. 18 Princeton, but came back to defeat Siena, No. 20 Iona, Villanova and Wagner in succession to reach a season-best four consecutive victories and push their record above .500 to 7-6.
Bucknell will be back in action this coming weekend at the Harvard Invitational. The Bison will play league foes George Washington and Harvard on Saturday before wrapping up the two-day event against Iona on Sunday.
