LEWISBURG, Pa. - One week after throwing a complete-game shutout, Bucknell softball's Alex MacLean (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) was named the Patriot League Pitcher of the Week. The junior went 1-0 with seven strikeouts in two games at the Phoenix Softball Clash earlier this month.
MacLean opened her season by blanking the tournament's host Elon on Feb. 18. She allowed just three hits and struck out five in her debut as the Bison won 2-0. It was the sixth shutout of her career, tying her for fifth in the program record book.
Later that day, MacLean pitched 4.1 innings against James Madison and struck out two more batters as Bucknell came from behind to defeat the Dukes 7-5. After her two appearances, MacLean improved her career strikeout total to 215, which ranks fifth all-time at Bucknell.
Despite having played just one weekend this season, MacLean has already improved her standing in the record books. She now ranks 10th in program history in games played (61), games started (49) and innings pitched (306). She is also eighth in career wins (22).
It is the fourth time the Patriot League has named MacLean its Pitcher of the Week. She also earned the award twice as a freshman and once last season.
Bucknell finished its opening weekend 2-1 at the Elon Phoenix Softball Clash. It will return to action this weekend when it travels to the Marshall Tournament in Huntington, W. Va., March 3-4. The Bison will take on Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne and Kent State in addition to the host Marshall.
