LEWISBURG, Pa. –The Bucknell women's water polo team matched its longest winning streak of the season as it captured its third straight game Sunday morning against Villanova on the final day of the CWPA/MAAC Crossover at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool. The Bison defeated the Wildcats by an 11-6 margin after leading 8-2 through three periods.
Mackenzie Ferry (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) led the Bucknell (6-6) offense with career highs in both goals (4) and points (5). Both figures equaled the highest by a Bison this year. Heather Smith (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep), Sayeh Bozorghadad (Los Altos, Calif./Castilleja) and Sarah Frank (Milford, Ohio/Milford) also posted multi-point days with each registering one goal and one assist. No one on the team, outside of Ferry, notched a multi-goal contest as eight different Bison scored goals in the contest.
Bucknell first-year head coach John McBride got a chance to play many of his reserves for long stretches as the Bison built a 5-1 halftime lead before stretching it to a six-goal advantage through three quarters.
The team's leading goal scorer this year, Taylor Barnett (Houston, Texas/Clear Lake), drew a team-high four ejections, and Bucknell had 11 six-on-five opportunities, but it converted just three of them.
Bison goalie sophomore Rena Heim (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) posted 10 saves, her third double-figure save outing in four games this weekend. She now has a team-high 73 stops on the year, just 50 shy of her freshman-year total of 123. Heim is also four saves shy of the 200 plateau for her career.
Bucknell's win over Villanova (0-10) extended its winning streak over the Wildcats to 14 games. This was the first meeting between the two teams since February 2009.
The Bison will wrap up their five-game weekend Sunday afternoon against Wagner. Start time is 3:15 p.m. The two teams met last Sunday in Kinney Natatorium with the Seahawks pulling out a 9-8 victory.
